Author/Organization: SAFE Bar Network

Brief Description:

This session is from NCCASA's 2021 NC Sexual Violence Primary Prevention Summit: "Pulling Back the Lens: Expanding Out Understanding of Violence Prevention." Nearly 1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men are the victims of attempted or completed rape in their lifetimes. It is no secret that alcohol and drugs are often involved in sexual assault. In fact, we live in a culture where many consider it acceptable to use alcohol and drugs to guarantee access to sex. We know that sexual aggressors use bars and other alcohol-serving venues to select, isolate, and even incapacitate their targets. Things are different at bars, restaurants, and nightclubs with staff trained to notice concerning behavior, interrupt effectively and support each other in creating a workplace culture focused on taking action to prevent sexual violence. At the SAFE Bar Network, we envision a “safe night out” for everyone and are working with the owners, managers, and staff of alcohol-serving establishments to create a community of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs across the country dedicated to preventing sexual harassment and sexual assault. Through this work with bars, restaurants, and nightclubs we have seen a powerful urgency to change how they are combating sexual violence. Our goal is to help preventionists across the country capitalize on this moment to connect with and train alcohol-serving venues in their local communities. In this workshop, we will explore building robust and innovative community partnerships with businesses in your community. You will gain skills to engage new audiences in developing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based strategies for prevention.
